Cristiano Ronaldo will once again represent Portugal on the international stage after being included in the squad for the upcoming Nations League matches. Portugal’s new manager, Roberto Martinez, announced the team’s roster on Friday, selecting Ronaldo despite his underwhelming performance at the recent Euro 2024 tournament. Ronaldo, who turned 39 years old in February, failed to score in Portugal’s five Euro 2024 matches before the team was eliminated by France in the quarter-finals via penalty shootout. Martinez, however, has chosen to continue with Ronaldo, stating that he believes the veteran striker still has a role to play. The new manager also confirmed that this Euro 2024 campaign marks the beginning of a new cycle for the team, focused on preparing for the 2026 World Cup. While Ronaldo’s inclusion in the team has been the subject of much discussion, Martinez has also included several promising young players, including 17-year-old Quenda, who has impressed with Sporting.
