The Democratic Republic of Congo’s army has accused M23 rebels of violating a recent ceasefire after clashes broke out in the country’s east. The fighting on Sunday, August 6, comes despite a ceasefire agreement reached in Luanda, Angola, on July 30. The Congolese army stated that the rebels attacked army positions in Kikubo, near the Ugandan border. The rebels, however, claimed that Congolese aircraft violated the ceasefire by flying over their areas. While relative calm returned on Monday, fears of renewed hostilities persist, raising concerns for civilian safety and displacement.
