Ciena and Arelion Achieve 1.6 Tb/s Data Transmission Milestone

Ciena Corporation and Arelion have achieved a significant milestone in data transmission with the world’s first live 1.6 terabits-per-second (Tb/s) wavelength data transmission. This breakthrough, accomplished over a 470km route in Arelion’s North American network, leverages Ciena’s advanced WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology. The achievement significantly boosts capacity between key Points-of-Presence (PoPs) in Arelion’s network, connecting Ashburn, Virginia (Equinix) and Telxius’ Virginia Beach cable landing station. This enhanced capacity is crucial for meeting the growing bandwidth demands of 5G, AI/ML applications, cloud services, and content delivery for both wholesale and enterprise customers. Arelion, a provider of global connectivity solutions, will deploy WL6e across its network to address these needs. The advanced technology offers Arelion a 50% reduction in space and power per bit, along with a 15% improvement in spectral efficiency compared to previous generations.
