China currently lacks the ability to mount a full-scale invasion of Taiwan, according to a report from Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense. Despite increasing military capabilities, the Chinese military faces limitations imposed by the challenging geography of the Taiwan Strait and a shortage of landing craft and logistical resources. However, China is accelerating its development of new weaponry, including H-20 bombers, hypersonic missiles, and a growing nuclear arsenal, while simultaneously testing new invasion tactics. The report highlights China’s attempts to isolate Taiwan, including the deployment of coast guard vessels to simulate blockade scenarios during exercises in May. While China acknowledges its aspiration to control Taiwan, it insists on peaceful unification, refraining from any open military conflict. Both Taiwan and China are significantly increasing their defense spending, with Taiwan allocating a record $20 billion for 2025, while China’s defense budget rose 7.2% last year, reaching $236 billion.
