China’s internet user base has reached a milestone, surpassing 1 billion users (1.09967 billion) by June 2024, according to the latest report from the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC). This represents a growth of 7.42 million users since the end of 2023 and translates to a 78% internet penetration rate. The report highlights a range of positive developments in China’s digital landscape, including robust growth in digital consumption, particularly in the areas of 3C products, wearables, and artificial intelligence (AI). The use of AI in manufacturing and agriculture is also increasing, with more individuals becoming proficient in using AI tools. Notably, senior citizens are increasingly embracing smartphone applications designed for their needs. Key areas of digital service consumption include online participation, with online food delivery and in-store dining services exceeding 500 million users each. The report also points to a significant growth in the mobile internet user base, with China currently boasting 3.917 million 5G base stations. This has facilitated nationwide 5G coverage, extending to rural areas.
