Chennai is taking steps to prevent rainwater logging in newly constructed drainage systems by drilling holes in concrete machine access points. These holes, designed for machine access during maintenance, were found to be collecting rainwater, posing a risk of dengue fever. The problem was highlighted in a news article about the accumulation of rainwater in the machine access holes in the Thiruvalluvarpuram 2nd street area of Chennai. Following this, the Chennai Water Board used a backhoe excavator to drill holes in the base of the access points, allowing accumulated rainwater to drain. While the immediate issue of waterlogging has been addressed, residents are requesting that the Chennai Water Board remove plastic bottles and other debris from the access holes to maintain cleanliness and prevent future health hazards.
