Cardinal Américo Aguiar, Bishop of Setúbal, has expressed concern about the declining participation in Catholic communities in Portugal. Speaking at the National Biblical Week in Fátima, he highlighted a ‘deficit of citizenship, not only civic but also in belonging to the Church.’ Aguiar observed that many are comfortable expressing their opinions online but are less willing to actively engage in community activities. He emphasizes the importance of listening to different perspectives, recognizing that others may hold valuable solutions and experiences. The Cardinal also pointed to a report prepared by the Portuguese Episcopal Conference for the Synod of Bishops, which acknowledges the need for the Catholic Church to be more inclusive and welcoming, particularly to marginalized groups such as families in new configurations, separated individuals, and those attracted to the same sex. The report stresses the need for continuous renewal of the Church to address contemporary challenges, while remaining faithful to its traditions. Aguiar highlighted the need for greater participation by women in leadership roles within the Church and for increased focus on fostering inclusion and diversity across all communities.
