The Brazilian government has lifted a ban imposed in July on Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, from using data from Brazilian users to train artificial intelligence (AI) models. The ban was initially imposed due to concerns about potential harm to users from the use of their data for generative AI training. However, the Brazilian data protection authority (ANPD) has accepted Meta’s appeal and new commitments, including increased transparency on data practices. Meta has agreed to provide Brazilian users with clear and accessible information about data processing for AI training via email notifications and within the Facebook and Instagram apps. The company will also update its public communication materials, such as privacy notices and website banners, with detailed information on AI training data usage.
