The Andalusian government is working to increase the water production of the Mar de Alborán desalination plant, aiming to provide a crucial water supply for Níjar farmers, particularly during the summer months. The plant, located near Rambla Morales in Almería, currently desalinates approximately 5,000 cubic meters of water per day, which is distributed to local farmers. However, the government plans to increase production to 20 cubic hectometers per year, significantly easing the water scarcity issue faced by farmers in the Níjar region. This ambitious plan comes in response to ongoing concerns about water shortages and a recent authorization granted by the government, allowing farmers to access 13,000 cubic meters of desalinated water per day starting in September. The Junta de Andalucía (Andalusian government) is working in partnership with Aqualia, the company that owns and operates the desalination plant, to facilitate this water production increase. Despite the temporary authorization, farmers remain concerned about the ongoing water scarcity, which has prompted protests and demands for a permanent solution.
