In 1824, a group of liberals known as ‘Los Coloraos’ attempted to overthrow King Ferdinand VII’s regime in Spain. Among them was José Gandia, an Almerian from Albox, who risked his life for his convictions. However, before his execution, Gandia chose to use the false name Francisco Rosas Barbero to protect his family from the repercussions of his actions. Historian Miguel Ángel Alonso uncovered this detail while researching Gandia’s life, revealing a story of courage and sacrifice that resonates even today. Alonso’s research also revealed the existence of another Almerian from Albox, whose surname is Pérez, who also participated in the rebellion. Though Pérez escaped, Gandia was captured and executed along with many others.
