African health experts have joined forces to create an ambitious 10-year plan to strengthen local production of vaccines, medicines, and health technologies. This initiative aims to address the continent’s reliance on global supply chains, which proved unreliable during recent health crises like the Covid-19 pandemic and the mpox outbreak. The goal is to achieve a significant market share, with at least 55% of medicines and 50% of vaccines produced locally by 2035. Key challenges identified include inadequate policies, weak regulatory oversight, limited investment in research and development, and difficulties in accessing technology transfer. However, the plan emphasizes the importance of strengthening local manufacturing capacity and addressing existing bottlenecks in supply chain management and procurement to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all Africans.
