Leyte Representative Richard Gomez, a former actor, voiced his frustration over the severe traffic congestion on EDSA, questioning why the dedicated bus lane isn’t opened to other vehicles during peak traffic hours. Gomez, in a Facebook post, highlighted the minimal number of buses utilizing the lane while traffic crawls. He pointed out that only a few buses were using the lane, asking why it wasn’t opened to other vehicles during heavy traffic to ease congestion. The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) responded by directing the inquiry towards the Department of Transportation (DOTr), stating that the DOTr is responsible for the EDSA bus lane. The DOTr and Gomez are yet to provide further comments. While the bus lane is intended to facilitate faster bus travel, it is strictly off-limits to other vehicles unless they are emergency responders like ambulances and police vehicles. Only a limited number of government officials, such as the President, Vice President, and Supreme Court Chief Justice, are granted access. Violations carry hefty fines and potential driver’s license suspension.
