The Geometric Power Plant in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria, is facing a critical gas shortage, severely impacting its operations and hindering economic growth in the region. The plant, which has a capacity of 188 megawatts, is only able to generate power from two of its three turbines due to the lack of gas. This has forced the plant to import 25 megawatts of electricity from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company at a significant cost, despite its ability to potentially export excess power to the national grid. The shortage is attributed to unreliable gas supply, impacting numerous customers, including manufacturing firms. The situation highlights the fragility of Nigeria’s energy infrastructure and the need for a more reliable and sustainable gas supply to support economic development.
